First edition thus. Duodecimo, pp., xviii, 389, [3] blank, plus frontispiece. With 64 line drawings by Hammond within text, 11 of which are full page plates included in the pagination; headpieces to chapters, list of illustrations, and introduction; title-page wholly drawn. Publisher’s smooth dark blue-green cloth; elaborate floral gilding and lettering to spine and upper board; top edge gilt. Small, neat ownership inscription of one Dorothy Percival in ink to front free end-paper. Minor restoration to lower joint, head and tail spine, expertly executed and barely perceptible. A few light spots of foxing to edges but contents generally bright and fresh. A very good copy.
The first edition with Hammond’s pen-and-ink illustrations. Hammond was ‘was the first identifiably female illustrator of Jane Austen’s novels, illustrating three Austen titles for two publishers. (Loosey, ‘Illustrated Austen’). A recent critic, writing on illustrated Austen editions argues that Hammond was ‘ the finest artist of this period [...] her decisive and characterized pen-and-ink drawings are neither whimsical nor over decorative’ (Southam, ‘Texts and Editions’). An attractive copy.
