Duodecimo in half sheets, pp., [4], 306, [1] of publisher’s advertisements, [1] blank, plus the folding map showing all the coal mines of the district, with inset plan of Newcastle. In the rare original publisher’s buff paper-covered boards, titles print to spine and upper board, with woodcut vignette by Thomas Bewick to upper board, and vignette of Tynemouth Priory to lower board; all edges uncut. Armorial bookplate of Ralph Lycester (1763-1835) to front paste-down, contemporary ownership inscription of the same to title-page. Minor loss to head of spine, joints cracked but holding, rubbing to edges and light soiling to lower board. Offsetting to title-page but internally otherwise rather clean. A well-preserved copy. The second printing in the publisher’s rare original boards. Newcastle Antiquarian John Hodgson’s history of the town followed by a descriptive guide to its main features including churches, public buildings, the River Tyne and neighbouring settlements like Hexham and Tynemouth. Hadrian’s Wall and local industries and shipping are described with a particularly detailed description of the coal trade. This second edition is expanded by more than 100 pages on the first printing. This bookseller has not encountered any other copy of this book in the publisher’s printed boards.
