FIRST EDITION. viii, 376 pp. Book Condition: Very Good. Red decorative cloth by Bone & Son with gilt titles, motifs to spine and gilt chatelaine motif to upper board; primrose yellow endpapers. Spine lightly sunned and edges rubbed; lower board a little scuffed. Paper label with decorative border to front pastedown, with inscription " M J Flanders, Holme, 1886" in ink; binder's ticket to rear pastedown. Sporadic light foxing mainly to prelims ; damp stain to rear endpapers spreading from joint approx 2-inches. Subject matter includes menus, servants duties, the art of cookery, expenses and the employers' legal obligations. The cover motif was used on the jacket of Dena Attar's Bibliography of Household Books - she suggests that" the book makes a frank appeal to the reader's snobbishness" (p246) and there is an emphasis on functions and fine living.
