FIRST EDITION. Small octavo, pp., iv, 5-200, with [pp.16] publisher's catalogue to rear. With six tissue-guarded plates, of which three are in colour including frontispiece of "Krelli his wife and counsellor" and a fold-out map hand-coloured in outline. Publisher's salmon pink cloth with blind foliate border to boards, and gilt titles to spine and upper board. Edges sprinkled red; canary yellow endpapers. Light soiling to boards and spine and upper board sun faded but a very goog copy. An personal account of South Africa to the middle of the nineteenth century, with much lively descriptive detail of the country and its inhabitants. Merriman (1809-82) eventually became Bishop of Grahamstown and was defeated in a series of court cases regarding the status of the Church of Southern Africa versus the Church of England over the appiontment of bishops. Scarce.
