Quarter vellum; marbled paper-covered boards with black title roundel to upper board, red titles to roundel and gilt to spine. Top edge gilt. Leather toned; boards worn to edge and a little surface-scuffed. Endpapers toned & lightly foxed with small brown marks at inner front hinge where adhesive tape has been removed; ownership inscription of Robert Henderson to ffep and list of friends who had read the book with dates from 1936 to 1958 below. 2-page typewritten account of "Eye-witness Account of the Fight Between Tom Sayers (England) and J C Heenan (America) " affixed to margin Plate XXVII with browned adhesive tape. A history of boxing in England from early beginnings, including biographical material on exponents of the noble art like Tom Cribb and John Broughton.
