Undated [1872]. Small quarto. xiv, 400 pp. Engraved title page plus 5 plates in colour and numerous illustrations throughout text. Book Condition: Very Good. Contemporary half maroon calf with 5 raised bands,titles and ruling in gilt and decoration in blind to compartments. Leather scuffed with surface wear along front joint and to spine tips and corners; boards soiled and stained with a few minor bums. Final 8 leaves misbound (all present but out of order) and colour plates bound together to fore instead of according to List of Illustrations. A little scattered foxing and fingermarking, mainly to prelims, and small nick with associated crease to p xiii otherwise contents clean and tight; no annotation or inscriptions.
Edwin John Brett was the editor of various periodicals including “Boys of England” and “The boy’s comic journal” (Attar, p 94) and this work was published as a series, providing “a cheap reliable Guide upon the numerous and various topics coming under the denomination of Housekeeping” (from Introduction). Contents include gardening tips, furnishings and household management, “management of children”, and needlework as well as recipes, diet and menus, interspersed with “Tales and Novellettes” including Daisy’s Peril and Eugene Aram. Rare - Copac locates only a single copy, at the British Library.
