Broadside approximately 50 x 38 cm printed upper half only. Single sheet printed on yellow paper in bold type with titles underlined. Folded across centre, dividing printed and plain halves; minor offsetting to blank half. Split approx 10 cm to centre of crease. Vertical crease folding the sheet into four; two small holes through the folded sheet. Minor nicks & creases to edge; “Secretary” inscribed in pencil and “Treasurer” crossed through at foot of text. Good condition.
Charity notice to the mining community of Brancepeth in Durham stating that the Board subscribed £50 on behalf of its members to the relief funds of the Whitehaven & West Stanley Pit Disasters. The explosion and fire on 11th May 1910 at Wellington Pit, Whitehaven was Cumbria’s worst ever pit disaster, in which 136 men and boys died; the explosion on 16th February 1909 at West Stanley in Durham claimed 194 lives. The broadside shows solidarity between mining communities in different areas of the country, helping each other in times of crisis. A very ephemeral and likely unique survivor.
