Square quarto, pp 205. 18 full page colour plates by Quentin Blake, plus numerous line drawings within text. Full deep maroon Nigerian goatskin with gilt titles to spine and upper board, top edge gilt; housed in grey paper-covered slipcase with titles blocked in gold. Pristine - appears unread. Signed and numbered by artist Quentin Blake in blue ink to limitation leaf. Minor scuffs to slipcase only- a Fine copy in Near Fine slipcase. Voltaire’s satirical classic, translated by Tobias Smollett and Introduced by Julian Barnes. Candide was first published in France in 1759, and Smollett’s translation formed part of his thirty-five-volume edition of Voltaire’s works published between 1761 and 1765; this edition follows the first edition in English, with minor emendations. £380.00
