Only the second novel by Lady Wood (1802-1879), wife of Sir John Page Wood and author of a dozen other works of fiction. Mother of novelists Lady Emma Barrett-Lennard and Anna Lady Wood is perhaps better-known today as the mother of Katherine “Kitty” O’Shea, whose long-term adulterous affair with Charles Stewart Parnell, the Irish nationalist, caused a major scandal and her divorce.
