William Knighton (1823-1889), colonial administrator and author, should not be confused with his near contemporary who was Private Secretary to King George IV. Knighton published a number of works either set in or about India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) including the History Of Ceylon, and he was one of the first writers to express sympathy with plantation labourers and to view them as victims. The autobiographical nature of the work may be exaggerated as he made similar claims about other works. Rare, COPAC locates just three copies at the BL, NLS and Cambridge.
