Publishers’ grey cloth with gilt titles to spine in unclipped pink pictorial dust-jacket. Cover cloth rubbed at spine tips. Mylar cover to dust-jacket has been fixed to free endpapers with 2 small pieces of adhesive tape (each approx 1-inch long), otherwise contents clean. Jacket toned and damp-stained, with minor loss top edge and associated repairs to reverse. A Very Good copy in Good jacket.
Reproduction of the 1860 work by Fordyce covering Iron manufacture as well as coal mining, with superb engravings by Hair. When it was written, the northern coalfield was the most important in Great Britain and iron production was technically well advanced, making the text historically significant. Introduction by Frank Atkinson of Beamish Museum. An invaluable portrait of a region during the heady flux of the height of the industrial revolution.
