Staining & soiling to cloth, which is rubbed to edges with very minor loss at head/tail of spine; gilt dull. Light foxing to endpapers and a few sporadic fingermarks. Inner hinge cracked. Gift inscription to title page signed "From the Author" together with his initials. Scarce autobiography from the closing stages of the Franco-Prussian war.
