SECOND EDITION, association copy. Octavo, pp. xvi, 485, [1], [2] catalogue. Vignette to title page and 42 figures within text. Bottle green finely reeded cloth with gilt titles to spine and elaborate scrolled border in blind to boards; primrose yellow endpapers. A slightly shaken copy with 5cm split at lower rear joint and weak inner hinges. Edges and spine tips a little bruised, and faint ring-mark to upper board. Endpapers soiled, light toning and scattered foxing to contents, and a little marginal annotation in pencil. Ownership inscription to ffep with address, and ownership signature to verso, the latter of J. B. Thompson, manager variously in charge of St Hilda’s, Westoe, Whitburn, Blaydon Burn and Axwell Park collieries.
Yorkshireman and author John Holland was a poet and journalist (1794-1872) from Handsworth, Sheffield. Contents include the history of fuel usage, natural history of coal and its formation and extraction, accidents, and the domestic and foreign coal trade.
