FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. [4], 105, [1]. Rebacked in bottle green cloth, retaining original leaf green paper-covered printed boards, endpapers renewed. Boards lightly soiled, with a couple of stains and surface chips to rear. A little scattered foxing, mainly to prelims, and ownership inscription in pencil to first blank. A very Good copy.
Description of the Northumberland market town as it was in the 1830s, with chapters on Trade and Commerce, Morals and Manners, and Education, together with chapters on characters that Robb met including anti-slavery campaigner Frederick Douglas, Young Italy libertarian Felice Orsini, and Members of Parliament Jospeh Cowen, W.B. Beaumont and Albert Grey. William Robb was founder of the local department store Robbs of Hexham, which traded in the town for 200 years. Scarce, we have had this title only once before over the last 30 years.
