FIRST EDITIONS. Octavo, pp. [198] & 1[98], printed recto only, with engraved roundel portrait to each entry (192 in total, 96 per volume). Contemporary maroon half calf with gilt titles and ruling to spine, decoration in blind to compartments, and marbled boards. Spines toned and boards lightly scuffed, with minor wear to edges and spine tips. Bookplate of the William Waples Collection (Masonic Lodge) to each front paste-down, and bold ownership inscription to ffep Vol I only; scattered light foxing, and annotation to lower margin of the entry for Sir Ralph Abercrombie to Vol I, otherwise contents clean. A Very Good matching set.
Single page biographies of the great and good from history as perceived in early nineteenth century Britain, including favourites like Lord Nelson and William Shakespeare, and soldiers, statesmen and artists (all male and the majority of whom are naturally English!).
