First thus. Two volumes in one. Octavo, pp. [9], 6-224. With 4 woodcut plates and 3 woodcut vignettes from the workshop of Thomas Bewick. Contemporary full mottled calf with gilt titles to olive green label to spine, gilt decoration to spine and border to boards, tooling in blind to dentelles; marbled endpapers. Covers a little rubbed to edge. Armorial bookplate of Henry Hobart to front paste-down; ownership inscription to verso ffep of his wife Charlotte Selina Hobart. A little scattered toning and foxing; Vol. II title slightly soiled. An attractive copy in a contemporay binding
David Walker commissioned Thomas Bewick to provide cuts for this edition following his similar commission for Goldsmith’s
Poetical Works in 1794; he eventually prevailed upon Bewick to supply them after a lengthy wait while Bewick worked on his own
Land Birds; there was no further association between Walker and Bewick. Henry Lewis Hobart (1774 - 1846) was the youngest son of the Earl of Buckinghamshire; he married Charlotte Selina Moore in 1824, and served four monarchs (George III & Iv, William IV and Victoria) as Dean of Windsor.
