Folio, pp. xxxii, 520, [40] Tables & Indices etc. Engraved headpiece to dedication leaf; 105 copper engraved plates as called for including 21 maps, of which 3 fold-out and 3 double-page. Sympathetically re-backed using original boards with original spine laid on; 5 raised bands, gilt titles to spine and decoration to compartments, gilt diaper design to boards inside double gilt-ruled border, gilt dentelles. All edges marbled. Corners bumped with associated wear; top edge of boards lightly scuffed. Armorial bookplate of Samuel George Smith to front paste-down. A little scattered light foxing; professional repairs to edges of title page and to p. 193, affecting margins only; small burn-hole to margin p. 131. A few faint marginal marks in pencil otherwise contents clean. A solid Very Good copy.
John Horsley, the antiquarian Presbyterian Minister, was educated at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle and Edinburgh University, graduating in 1701. A noted natural philosopher and teacher, this volume “was one of the major antiquarian achievements of its day” (ODNB).
