Octavo, pp. viii, 544,  Index. Contemporary quarter calf with gilt titles to maroon and olive green labels to spine, and elaborate gilt decoration, with marbled paper-covered boards. Loss to calf at corners; wear to spine tips with minor loss, and boards slightly surface scuffed. From the library of Sir Edwyn Francis Stanhope, with his attractive copper engraved armorial bookplate to front paste-down; no annotation or inscriptions. Scattered light foxing, a little heavier to endpapers and prelims; a few leaves creased. A Very Good copy overall.
Contents include Gentz on “The State of Europe”, Herder’s “Philosophy of the History of Man” and Sauer’s “Expedition to the Northern Parts of Russia”. Original owner Sir Edwyn Francis Stanhope was a distant cousin of Jane Austen, who described him thus: “ his legs are too short and his tail too long” with reference to his hairstyle of a pig-tail.
