Frontispiece engraved View of Sis and 3 engraved plates, plus numerous illustrations within text; large folding Map of Cilicia and the North of Syria composed from Beaufort, Chesney & Fischer’s maps with corrections from Ainsworths & the Author’s personal survey. Full polished calf with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to black label to spine and gilt decoration to bands and tips; “Dollar Institution” gilt-stamped to upper board; blind border to boards. All edges marbled. Calf lightly scuffed. Endpapers toned, with printed Dollar Institution Prize plate to front paste-down, dated 1861. Leaves a little toned, with light stain top edge from p. 381 onwards; map creased from mis-folding, with professional repairs. Overall a Very Good copy, in a handsome binding.
Often referred to by its English title “Lares and Penates”, this is the Scottish edition of the same work which is divided into two with the constituent parts entitled “Cilicia and its Governors” and “Lares and Penates”. Barker (1810-1856) the English orientalist and Professor of Languages at Eton, tragically died aged 45 of cholera whilst serving his country as a translator in the Crimean War.
