Octavo, pp xvi,248, [8] advertisements. 8 engraved plates, including frontispiece of Shields Harbour captioned "Entrance to the Tyne"; 7 plans, of which 5 are large & fold-out, comprising 2 double-page sectional elevations, the 1723 Plan of the River, Mr Ure's 1880 Chart, a sectional elevation of the Tyne bridges, Ure & Messer's 1879 Plan and a Longitudinal Section on the centre of the River up to Wylam. Publisher's scarlet cloth with bevelled edges and gilt titles to spine & upper board; River God Tyne motif and ruling gilt-stamped to upper board & blind-stamped to lower. Spine tips creased and upper board a little marked; lower board superficially damp-stained. A slightly shaken copy with cracked inner front hinge; printed bookplate of A. L. Bound to front paste-down and name & address inscribed to first blank. Chart of the River Tyne to Wylam slightly mis-folded with associated nicks to edge. Very Good contents in Good binding.
 
Local history classic by the Secretary to the River Tyne Commission and the best and most authoritative history of the river ever written. Ordinarily found in green or brown cloth, in 30 years of bookselling in the North East this is the only copy I have ever seen in red cloth.
