FIRST EDITION. Duodecimo, pp. 24. Engraved frontispiece depicting Newcastle Cathedral, vignette to title page and extra-illustrated with three plates of Newcastle caricatures. In an unusual geometric and lattice patterned binding of full bottle green calf with gilt rolls, gilt ornaments and gilt spine title. Upper joint cracked with minor loss (1cm). Rubbed edges. Small closed tear to titlepage (repaired) and leaf B8. Some toning to pages, predominantly prelims.
This lively collection includes Oliver’s most well loved song “Newcassel Props” along with “Newcastle Wonders” and other riotous songs in the Geordie dialect. Extra-illustrated with three plates tipped in at “Newcassel Props” depicting the local eccentrics described in the song; Cull Billy, Captain Benjamin Starkey, and Blind Wullie. Reprinted in 1829 and recently by the British Library. COPAC lists three institutional copies only. Rare.
