First Thus; the Peacock Edition. Octavo, pp. xxvii, [1], 476, [2]. Printed by the Chiswick Press. Illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson, including frontispiece with tissue guard, vignette to title page, head-pieces, tail-pieces and illustrations within the text. The book contains a total 160 line drawings by Thompson. Publishers’ smooth dark blue/green cloth with striking peacock design in gilt to spine and entire upper board; aeg; dark green matt endpapers. Clean and bright with slight creasing to spine tips; exceedingly minor wear to extreme tips of corners, and with slight bruise to upper corner of lower board. Tidy ownership inscription dated in year of publication to half-title; a little scattered foxing, almost exclusively to tissue guard and adjacent leaves, and to endpapers. A Near Fine copy.

The “Peacock Edition” is the most sought after late 19th century edition of Pride and Prejudice. It is the only work in which Thomson also illustrated the head- and tail-pieces and decorative initial letters. Scarce, particularly in this condition.
