First, and sole edition. 12 mo, pp., [i-v], vi-xii, 83, [1]. Bound with the half-title and with 10 woodcuts by Thomas Bewick (borrowed with Bewick’s permission from “Quadrupeds”). A clean, crisp uncut copy in original marbled boards, sympathetically rebacked in grey paper-covered card. Boards lightly scuffed with wear to corners. Scattered light foxing and creasing; no annotation or inscriptions.
Rare “portable pocket directory” on the cultivation of decorative blooms popular in the late eighteenth century. Written by William Preston, sub-editor of the “Newcastle Chronicle” and a friend of Thomas Bewick, from notes provided by florist John Hudson. The work is printed on fine, thick paper and whilst not mentioned on the title-page the typography suggests the hand of Thomas Saint in the publication.
