Landscape format photograph album containing 18 brown card leaves with 129 annotated photographs each approximately 13 cm x 9 cm, mainly in monochrome with 12 colour. Images mounted on the leaves using photograph corners, from which the images may be removed without damage. Bound in a later brown plastic folder with inscribed labels to spine and upper board. Printed label “Alf Rodenby Collection” inside front cover, and inscribed labels to inscribed title page referring to ships on the voyages. Album surface scuffed, with damp staining to upper and lower boards but photographs unaffected and in Very Good condition.
Varied photographic collection recording a post-war return voyage (on the “Veendam” and “Mauretania”) from Britain to New York, and subsequent tour around the U.S.A. and Canada. The trip is captured in detail, recording the journey onboard the Harland & Woolf built “Veendam”, including cabins, decks and leisure activities, and docking in New York. Boston, New Hampshire, Colorado, Texas, Niagara Falls, New York and other locations are captured in detail, with images of architecture, vehicles, factories, tourist attractions, and aerial views. One disturbing photo is labelled ‘The Lynching?’ and portrays a dangling hanged effigy in front of a cowboy-hatted crowd at a public event, apparently based upon Zane Grey’s gunslinger tale of vigilantism “West of Pecos”. The return journey on board the Cunard “Mauretania” is also recorded, showing the decks, cabins and views of Cobh in Ireland, from the sea.
