Conner (1907-1991), the author of “Shake Hands With the Devil” and numerous other works of fiction, here tells his own story. His upbringing during the regime of the Black and Tans and during the Civil War in Ireland was difficult as the son of an RIC police officer, and Conner also suffered from depression and homelessness during the period before his success as an author.
