FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. xiii, [1], 350. Complete with the eight illustrated plates, including one folding map, and illustrations within text, as called for. Bound in early nineteenth century half calf and marbled paper over boards, blind fillets to spine, gilt spine titles, speckled text block. Bound by the pre-eminent Newcastle bookbinder William Lubbock (with his bookbinders ticket to front free endpaper). Historically and sympathetically re-backed, minor wear to board edges. All plates free from tears and staining. Contents remarkably clean, bright, and tight.
Attractive copy of this scarce account of Hadrian’s Wall written by the eccentric, vegetarian bookseller William Hutton (1723-1815). Hutton was the first person to walk the full length of the wall since Roman times, which he achieved the year prior to publication in 1801, entirely on foot, sleeping under bushes and fording streams along the way, at the grand age of 77. With the bookplate to front paste-down and ownership signature to the title-page of Novocastrian lawyer William Peters (1732[?] - 1807). Peter’s is buried in St Nicholas’ Cathedral in city centre Newcastle.
