By the time of the publication of The Prisoner of Azkaban had come around Bloomsbury Publishing were beginning to realise that they had a publishing phenomenon on their hands. Interviewed in 2013, Nigel Newton, CEO of Bloomsbury stated ‘ if you think of any of the great children’s classics, there would tend to be a really nice edition. Harry Potter deserves it more than anything we have ever published’. The books then were published with the gift market in mind. The Prisoner of Azkaban was the first to be published (Errington p. 199) in September 1999 with The Philosopher’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets published simultaneously just a few days later. The print run of all three is unknown but was in a limited number, with The Prisoner of Azkaban appearing as a first printing most rarely.
