SECOND EDITION. Large paper copy, one of only 8 such copies printed, with Proof plates on India paper. Quarto, pp.[4], ii, 93. 18 steel engravings (of as many as 20) by Gosden, vignette to title page, decorative initial letters, Fishing-House engraving to p.45 and fishing creel tail-piece. Contemporary half-calf with gilt titles to spine and marbled paper-covered boards. Wear head & tail of spine; boards scuffed with wear to edge. Bound without the facsimile title-page from the 1653 first edition, and the Madeley Manor plate. Scattered foxing, mainly to plate margins; no inscriptions. A very good copy. Originally published with Walton’s “Lives”, Zouch’s memoir of Walton was printed here as a standalone piece to complement the recent republication of “The Complete Angler”. Zouch (1757-1815), the English clergyman and student of Walton’s works, also wrote a number of other biographical and theological works as well as editing those of Walton. Excessively rare as one of only eight copies with the plates on India paper. Coigny lists two of the India paper copies with 20 plates and one copy with an unspecified number, ergo this copy may well have been produced with only eighteen plates. £450.00
