Superb full calf bound by Bayntun of Bath in 1987, with 5 raised bands to spine, gilt titles to maroon morocco labels to spine and repeated gilt diaper design of fleur-de-lys motifs to spine and boards; gilt dentelles; all edges gilt. With 3 letters and receipt from binders laid-in, all dated 1986-7 and detailing the substantial re-stitching and binding costs. Printed address label to front paste-down. A little light scattered foxing, mainly to prelims, and slight offsetting from embellishments, otherwise clean and bright. A rear fine set. Originally published in France in 1751, this first English edition quickly followed. Voltaire (1694-1778), the enlightenment polymath, philosopher and prolific writer, adopted the nom-de-plume of Voltaire after his imprisonment in the Bastille in 1718. His work was highly influential in the development of French historiography and biography, and this study of Louis XIV, the Sun King, covers the period from the later years of Cardinal Richelieu’s influence to several years after Louis’ death.
