FIRST EDITION Association copy in a Limited Edition of 500 copies. Octavo, pp ix, [3],164. 14 plates including frontispiece, plus 4 illustrations in text. Original green cloth titles in gilt to spine and in blind to upper boar; top edge gilt. From the library of historian William S. Garson, with his address stamp to both paste-down endpapers and marginal markings and annotation in pencil. Some scuffing and wear, slightly shaken with weak inner hinges.
The scarce original edition of Tomlinson’s classic local history work. Former owner William Scorfield Garson (1869-1946) was the author of “The Origin of North Shields and its Growth” and many booklets relating to local history in North East England, and was a founder member of the Tynemouth Antiquarian Society; it seems highly likely that this book was used in research for his local history publications.
