FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. xv, [1], 431, [1]. With 16 monochrome plates including frontispiece of “The Fairy Lao Yu”. Publishers’ black quarter cloth with gilt titles to spine and chequered cloth-covered boards in green and orange. Spine creased at tips and a little worn along repaired upper joint. Light foxing, mainly to text-block edge otherwise contents clean with no annotation or inscriptions. A very good copy.
Scarce anthology of folk-tales based upon original Chinese texts and aimed as an introduction for the general reader. The volume includes stories of dragons, wizards, taoism, divination, vampires and more, and is believed to have influenced later writers such as Montague Summers.
