Illustrated with 14 illustrations taken from David Jones’ wood engravings. Bound in publisher’s oatmeal cloth with gilt titles to spine, with taupe dust jacket blocked with resurrection design by Jones. Housed in a teal paper covered clamshell box, with Jones’ designed pictorial paper onlay and gilt titles to upper board, gilt titles to spine. Some specks of white to edge of case. An impeccably clean and crisp fine copy in a fine dust-jacket and near fine box.
Luxurious reproduction of the First edition of David Jones’ “Book of Jonah”, originally published in 1926 by the Golden Cockerel Press. The original production had a very limited print run of only 175 copies, making it one of the scarcest titles produced by the Golden Cockerel Press. This Folio facsimile is printed by Memminger on corolla book laid ivory paper, and bound in cloth by Lachenmair. The third title in the Folio Society’s Fine Press Classics series, this highly dramatic, multi-symbolic work is a strikingly Modernist take on Christian Primitivism and marked Jones coming into his own as an artist after tutelage under Eric Gill. With an accompanying specially commissioned essay on the work by Sebastian Carter, editor of Parenthesis, the Journal of the Fine Press Book Association.
