Batten: with 9 full page plates to Volume I and 8 to volume II, plus vignettes to title-pages and numerous pen and ink illustrations throughout text. Publishers’ pictorial blue cloth with black titles to spine and upper board; door furniture motifs in black to boards and bell to spine. Cover cloth lightly surface soiled and spines slightly toned; endpapers lightly toned otherwise contents clean and crisp. A very good set. Selections of traditional tales such as “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and “The Lambton Worm”, from the extensive ballads and lore of England, by the Australian-born English folklorist. Jacobs (1854-1916) was the editor of “Folklore” the journal of the Folklore Society, honorary secretary of the International Folklore Council and was one of the leading authorities on the subject (ODNB). His anthologies helped to popularise many of the better known modern children’s fairy tales. With the wood engraved armorial bookplate of Edward Jackson Barron FSA (1826-1918) to both front paste-downs. Barron was a former grand deacon of the United Grand Lodge of Freemasons of London. Scarce, but especially so as a matching set.
