The never yet bettered comprehensive and well-illustrated study of the castles, fortalices, towers, peles, bastle houses and barmkins on the southern side of the border with Scotland, built from the twelfth to sixteenth century, with numerous plans. Bates (1853-1902) of Langley Castle (not featured in the book!) the historian and antiquarian, focused much of his work on the medieval period in Northumberland and was a regular contributor to the annals of the Newcastle Society of Antiquaries.
