Rebound in three quarter polished mottled maroon and green calf with olive and gold cloth, gilt titles and five raised bands to spine, and gilt decoration to spine compartments. Matching marbled endpapers. An unusal binding. Rubbed to spine tips, joints and board edges. Top-edge gilt others uncut.
Notably a cleric, Francis William Galpin authored many books on antiquarian musicology. “Old English Instruments of Music” is Galpin’s contribution to “The Antiquary’s Books” series, edited by J. Charles Cox, the 19th volume in the series. Galpin’s collection of over 500 musical instruments currently resides in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. One of his students included Geneviève Thibault de Chambure who founded the Laboratoire d'Organologie et d'Iconographie Musicale.
