“Behemoth” is the followup to Hobbes’ scandalous work “Leviathan”, charting the English Civil Wars from the Scottish Revolution of 1637, to the 1660 Restoration of the Monarchy. A barely concealed vigourous attack on the values of the religious and political establishment of Restoration England, King Charles II refused to let Hobbes publish “Behemoth” and instead it was circulated and pirated in Europe. Three years after Hobbes’ death, it was published by his literary agent, William Crooke. This new edition, the first since 1889, is edited by Paul Seaward and is volume 10 of a scheme of 27 of Hobbes’ works.
