Title page of Hair's "Sketches of the Coal Mines in Northumberland & Durham", 1839, bound-in as pre-title with former owner Henry Laidler`s name inscribed to upper edge, 42 plates as called for. One-inch tear to page 27/8 and sporadic foxing throughout, light tanning to page edges. First published in 1839 this is the second and best edition of this most famous work, containing 16 plates not published in the earlier edition. Thomas Henry Hair (1810-1882), painter, engraver and etcher originally produced the images in this book as a series of watercolours of the Great Northern Coalfield, from which the etchings in this book were made. The accurate and contemporary scenes show a region in flux, the use of steam power in driving engines, haulage engines and the new locomotives.
