FIRST EDITION, First Issue with date to title page. Small quarto (approx 22 x 13.5 cm), printed in double columns with each poet separately paginated: pp [6], xi, [1], 225, [1]; xi, [1], 275, [1]; vii, [1], 75, [1]. Vignette to title page. Green half-calf with 4 raised bands, maroon calf label to spine, gilt titles, pebbled green cloth-covered boards. All edges stained red. Calf scuffed with wear to corners; cover cloth a little wrinkled with associated wear. Lacks frontispiece. Rear inner hinge cracked but firmly holding. Light foxing throughout and a little staining to edges.
As well as being the very first collected edition of Keats’ work and the first printing of numerous poems by Coleridge and Shelley this edition also includes brief lives of each poet including the first printing of Mary Shelley’s memoir of her husband and the first printing of Leigh Hunt’s biography of Keats. Though famous for producing pirated works, in this case Galignani had the full cooperation of the poets’ families and executors, including access to Shelley’s papers.
