FIRST EDITION, one of no more than 12 copies on India paper. Octavo, pp. lx, 248. 280 head and tail-pieces by Thompson, Landells, Nesbit & others from William Harvey’s drawings after Northcote’s designs, including portrait vignette to title page with tissue guard. Bottle green cloth (possibly publisher’s original) with gilt titles to black label to spine, and ruled borders in blind to boards; primrose yellow endpapers. Edges a little bruised with minor wear to corners and head of spine. Ownership inscriptions of one M. M. Atwood and S. Atwood in pencil to front paste-down and verso half-title respectively, and small bookplate of John Porter to front paste-down. A Very Good copy. The first printing of the second series of Northcote’s ‘Fables’ (first series pub. 1828). Whittingham’s practice was to produce 6 to 12 copies printed on India paper; Harvey, who drew the illustrations from Northcote’s designs, was engraver Thomas Bewick’s star pupil and an important designer in his own right.
