Tan half calf, sympathetically re-backed with gilt titles to black label to spine, using original marbled paper-covered boards; marbled endpapers. Boards a little scuffed; corners and head of spine slightly bruised. Scattered foxing; some toning to leaves; very small loss to margin p. 19/20 and to text p. 23/24. Gift inscripiton to verso ffep dated 1849; no annotation. A Very Good copy.
A typical Stockdale hotchpotch of assorted pieces including verses such as
John Gilpin and Gray’s
Elegy, history, and short stories etc. Stockdale first published a separate edition of ‘The History of Little Jack’ with John Bewick’s illustrations in 1788. John Bewick’s cuts in this, the fourth Stockdale edition, are mostly from the 1788 ‘Little Jack’, and the 1789 ‘The History of Three Brothers’. The last cut is signed by J.B.
