Limited edition of 300 copies only. Quarto, ff., 100, printed and paginated to recto only apart from the final leaf; [2] a prospectus of Crawhall’s works to date. Aside from the one page forward the work is in the form of a sample book illustrated throughout with Crawhall’s woodcuts. Bound in quarter scarlet cloth and publishers’ pictorial boards. Paper covers slightly soiled, rubbed to extremities and spine sunned. Some toning to endpapers, light speckled foxing, mainly to first few leaves. Text block square, tight, and clean. Woodcuts bold and crisp.
Rare collection of Crawhall’s witty and macabre woodcuts in his unmistakable artfully naive, vernacular style, including some of his earliest and latest work. Joseph Crawhall II was a Newcastle artist, rope-maker, and antiquarian with his unique anachronistic style ushering in the chapbook revival of the 1890s. Despite his historical influences his bold and graphic work still feels incredibly contemporary and vivid.
