First Edition. Landscape quarto, pp. [24]. Illustrated with lithographed illustrations, head and tail-pieces, and ornaments throughout. In publishers’ original illustrated golden brown paper wrappers stitched to spine with an olive green silk ribbon. Publishers’ wraps have some slight soiling, small closed tears to edges and minor loss to to lower right corner of upper wrap. Contents clean.
Humorously illustrated line of succession cameo portraits of English Monarchs cut in Crawhall’s unique artfully naive, vernacular style and including some absurdly funny tail-pieces. Crawhall’s fervent antiquarianism, and his home town’s rich history of chapbook and street literature production, greatly inspired his anachronistic illustrations. However, his bold and graphic work is also incredibly forward looking and does not look out of place alongside the work of contemporary illustrators today. Necessarily limited in number and one of Crawhall’s rarer works.
