SECOND EDITION. Octavo, pp. vi, 305, [1], 4 (catalogue). Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard; large folding map to pocket to rear (approx 70 cm x 22 cm). Publishers’ bottle-green finely pebbled cloth with gilt titles to spine, gilt panels and vignette to upper board, and double fillet in black to upper and in blind to lower board; primrose yellow endpapers. Spine very slightly creased and tips a little rubbed; upper corner of upper board bruised, otherwise covers clean and bright. Very faint “ghost” marks to ffep where pencil inscription has been erased; rear endpapers slightly toned. Small bookseller’s sticker top corner of front pastedown. Several minor splits to map at folds, and single split approx 5 cm. A Very Good copy.
Comprehensive guide to Hadrian’s Wall and district with attractive gilt panels and vignette to upper board. Aimed at tourists using the Newcastle to Carlisle railway, with suggested walks and detailed descriptions and history of Roman and later buildings from Carlisle to Dilston Castle. Scarce, especially with the map which is often lacking.
